The mid-life crisis needs to be dealt with a mid-life re-engineering – a reverse swing in the death overs, which gives a new shine to your life! A friend who usually has angst and stress etched in the lines of his face has lately started looking relaxed and at ease. The change is so dramatic that I had to ask him the secret. Surprised that I noticed, he revealed that he had made a conscious decision to ‘re-engineer’ himself.
Explaining the components of that re-engineering he said there are three aspects to his plan – focus sharply on the present, to take himself and his needs more seriously, and to not be distracted or agitated by things that do not matter in the long run. And so he has started nurturing his physical and mental self, being a little selfish with his time, and dedicating a few hours every day unabashedly to himself. The result is there for all to see and be inspired by!
To pause, reassess and then re-engineer yourself and life is not impossible. But not many have the willpower and discipline such an exercise requires. And more important, not many have the awareness to realise that such a change is needed.
To start on the path towards that change can be nothing short of a passion to better your life and prospects. You need to take it up with the zeal of a project that needs to be completed — a junoon that subsumes all else. It is a promise you make to yourself to extract the best life has to offer.
Do you find yourself restless, agitated, and unable to focus most of the time? Do you hanker after something unknown; remain dissatisfied with what you have? If so, you need to reassess your life, map out what you wish to do with your future, and take appropriate steps towards it.
Midlife is the time most face an existentialist crisis wondering if that is all there is to life, or is there a deeper meaning and purpose one is unaware of? A mid-life re-engineering is a sure way to meet the mid-life crisis. After all, it is when life throws up questions that we set out in pursuit of answers and meaning. And it is never too late to take a call to press Alt+Del+Control and Reboot.
Take the example of cricket. Just as in the death overs of a match a reverse swing can make all the difference to the game, similarly in life’s sunset years too, reverse-swinging can be a game-changer! As you approach the peak of life, it is already time to prepare for the later years. Just as to keep the swing going, bowlers work at keeping an old ball shining on one side, we need to keep our best sides alive and well-nourished, actively planning activities and pursuits of our sunset years. And just as the player practices, strategises and strikes at the right moment, we need to do the same with our lives.
Remember, the post-retirement years today equal, if not exceed, the number of working years. If you walk into that part of your lives unprepared, you have nothing but disappointment awaiting you. Plan and prepare a bit, and just like the reverse-swing of an old ball that changes an out swinger into an in-swinger, you could be changing your game too at the eleventh hour!
